Participated in the Rails to Trails ride which turned out to be a good day for a century ride. The weather was perfect as it was overcast with a light cross wind from the east at 6 mph.

I never heard the total count of riders but there seemed to be more riders this year than last year. For cyclist that use this trail, it was an opportunity to give back to the area. Proceeds are used to help maintain this great trail. The ride offered food before and after the ride with plenty of sag ...

Saturday September 27th 2008 Start time 8:00 @ Flat Woods

This is a 7 mile wooded circle in almost 6000 acres. We can all finish together and meet for brunch at Panera Bread nearby afterwards. Meet at the trail head at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard entrance located 1 mile northeast of I-75. It allows us to gather before & after the ride and to cover whatever distances each individual is comfortable with while being no more than 7 miles away from the parking lot.

Earlier than usual, Adventure Cycling is opening registration for seven of our most popular and challenging tours from epic adventures to early season trips:

In print: Thursday, September 18, 2008

Just like their riders, bikes come in many shapes and styles. It's easy to be intimidated by the enormous selection when visiting a bike shop for the first time. The key is to be honest with yourself and the bike shop employees. Choose the bike designed for the type of riding you will be doing. If you end up with the wrong kind of bike, you will have wasted your money and likely won't enjoy it.

This was the first of hopefully many more Miles for Hope rides. For those who missed the ride, sorry. You missed a good one! You could quickly tell that the ride was organized by a cyclist as the organization was perfect and there were so many volunteer's helping with the event.

I arrived at 6:00am when the registration opened which was way too early. I was really surprised when I went to pickup my registration package and goody bag they were ready and waiting for everyone. I was ...

If you want to wake up the neighbors and bother everyone with your music while you ride your bike, the cy.fi wireless iPod dock is the bike speaker for you. And as a special bonus, it looks like an orangutan's ass! Working with the old-school iPod nano (and probably working with any iPod with a dock connector), it's a wireless speaker, and no, it's not using Bluetooth. It's using the Kleer Audio transmission that claims to be 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth.

Pedal Power: Cotton Candy Bike

Via the blog Make comes another way to spin something delicious. A while back we covered the Blender Bike and now comes the cotton candy bike. Riding around with a propane tank attached to my bike might make me a little nervous, but it’s nice to see yet another example of pedal power. From the blog entry . . .

Kai took these photos in southern China in 2006, the sugar is heated with propane but the cotton candy is spun using the bike pedals.

The Safety Illumination of Rider light ("SIR Light") from Safe Bicycling Innovations mounts to the seat tube or seat post to illuminate the cyclists legs.

According to inventor Dr. James Carillo, the standard bicycle lights "does nothing to identify the rider as a bicyclist."

Carillo created the SIR Light after a near accident with a motorist while commuting to work on a dark morning. His strobe headlight and rear taillight surprisingly, were not enough light ...

Many of us may be planning a vacation this fall and what good is time off if you can't bring your bike along. Cyclelicio.us put together this awesome list of airlines and their bicycle carrying charges. Some seem outrageous ($175?!) but most are in the $50 range, which is what you'd expect to pay for a quality shipping service. Boxes must total less than 62 inches in all three dimensions to avoid being qualified as oversized, and most will not allow boxes larger than 80 inches.

Here's a vest that displays your speed on your back, letting everyone know how fast you're traveling on your bicycle.

There's more to it than merely showing off, though.

Inventors Brady Clark and Mykle Hansen say there are three goals behind the Speed-Vest: To increase awareness that bicycling is efficient; educate motorists about overtaking bicyclists safely; and demonstrate that a person can easily bike 10-15 mph.

The garment is not yet available commercially, but there's ...

Since this is a new event I wanted to add some background and a Fox News story about this event. Bob is a member of the Suncoast Cycling Club and I understand there are a couple of club members who have also been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Each year more than 200,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. Primary brain tumors comprise approximately 40,000 of these diagnoses.

Here is a local Fox News Story about Bob and this event.

It is truly amazing how fast things are changing with the medias portrayal of biking since just the beginning of the year. The news reports done on people commuting at beginning of this year was generally one of astonishment and amusement at this wacky folks trying save a few bucks. But in just a short 7 months they have made a noticeable turn towards the positive. The fuel saving, the heath benefits and the simplicity of it all. This truly may be the year of the bike after all.
