Earlier than usual, Adventure Cycling is opening registration for seven of our most popular and challenging tours from epic adventures to early season trips:

EPIC

TransAmerica,, self-contained – the classic tour, under your own power – as Rick Wojciak, a TransAm rider, said last year: “There will be other trips but I don't think they will be able to top this one.”

TransAmerica, supported – the classic tour, but your gear is carried – same intimate feel, much lighter load

Going somewhere?

Many of us may be planning a vacation this fall and what good is time off if you can't bring your bike along. Cyclelicio.us put together this awesome list of airlines and their bicycle carrying charges. Some seem outrageous ($175?!) but most are in the $50 range, which is what you'd expect to pay for a quality shipping service. Boxes must total less than 62 inches in all three dimensions to avoid being qualified as oversized, and most will not allow boxes larger than 80 inches.

A cyclist who pedalled the world for more than 40 years, braving raging rivers, a lion and the hospitality of an Eskimo princess, has been killed by a hit-and-run driver in Greece.

Ian Hibell, 74, was a well-known figure in the world of long-distance cycle touring, setting several records and pedalling the equivalent of ten times around the Equator.

He died on the road between Athens and Salonika when he was hit by a car whose driver was apparently in a race with another motorist. ...

About 6 years ago, astronaut John B. Herrington was speeding around the Earth at 17,000 mph in the Space Shuttle Endeavor.

Today he's embarking on a cross-country bicycle tour from Washington's Olympic Peninsula aboard his fully loaded Trek 520 on which he'll be lucky to average 12 mph.

Let's just call it one small step for man, one giant pedal stroke for mankind.

The cross-country bike tour is called Rocketrek and it's intended to get kids interested in science, technology, ...

What's touted as the biggest-ever cross-country bicycle tour is currently making its way across the US.

The 2008 Sea to Sea - Ending the Cycle of Poverty bike tour boasts 127 cyclists who are making the entire 3,881-mile trek from Seattle to Jersey City, New Jersey. They're joined along the way by 91 other bicyclists who are riding different segments.

All cross-country rides have to start with a rear-wheel dip in the ocean. This is what it looked like, above, when the 100-plus ...

CALISTOGA -- The route to Vincent Arroyo Winery wasn't nearly as convoluted as they made it sound: Over a wood-slat bridge that clattered beneath our tires, through the parking lot of the Home Plate Cafe, alongside a golf course, across a one-lane stone bridge (vintage 1904) and down a dirt lane flanked by leafy green grapevines.

This was an ideal way to experience the Napa Valley wine country -- on a bicycle.

About 20 spandex-clad fraternity brothers descended on the Landon School in Bethesda on Friday for the final leg of the Journey of Hope, a bicycle tour that has taken the group across the country in an effort to raise money for people with disabilities.

Altogether, three tours of cyclists totaling more than 60 riders have made their way across the country, covering 4,000 miles and nine weeks this summer, starting in Seattle and San Francisco, taking different routes across America. The ...
