It is truly amazing how fast things are changing with the medias portrayal of biking since just the beginning of the year. The news reports done on people commuting at beginning of this year was generally one of astonishment and amusement at this wacky folks trying save a few bucks. But in just a short 7 months they have made a noticeable turn towards the positive. The fuel saving, the heath benefits and the simplicity of it all. This truly may be the year of the bike after all.

A proposed ordinance will require Walton County residents to watch their speed, but not while they're driving in their cars.

The ordinance would enforce an 8 mph speed limit for all bicyclists riding along County Road 30-A's bike path.

Some bike riders who say they think county officials should back peddle and change the proposed ordinance.

Seattle is now officially a gold level Bicycle Friendly Community.

The League of American Bicyclists made the award to Mayor Greg Nickels at the opening of the international Pro Walk / Pro Bike Conference in Seattle.

The designation comes about a year after the city council unanimously approved a resolution in favor of the hard-fought 10-year, $240 million bicycle master plan.

Although it was issued to Nickels, all the bicyclists in Seattle are responsible for the award. ...

For many bicyclists on the streets of Chicago, coming upon a red light or a stop sign is not necessarily a signal to halt.

"If there's nothing around, no traffic, it doesn't faze me," said Larry Smith, 32. "It's a victimless crime. When you're riding a long distance, stopping and starting all the time just adds to your fatigue."

Eleven cyclists on a leisurely Sunday morning ride were plowed down by a cabbie as they rode east on the MacArthur Causeway near the Palm Island entrance, Miami Beach police said.

NEBRASKA AVENUE - Seminole Heights bicyclist Alan Snel used to avoid the treacherous potholes of the four-laned Nebraska Avenue.

But now that the southern section of the Florida Department of Transportation's $11-million Nebraska makeover is smoothed and re-striped, Snel uses new bike lanes to get downtown. He says the ride takes him 15 minutes.

If you're also a fan of another Tampabay.com blog, Ante Up, this one's for you. The United States Playing Card Company prints many brands of playing cards. One of the most common is Bicycle. Chances are you've seen them around: they've been in production since 1885. The company's Web site has a cool history of the cards and the meaning behind the designs.

The Joker – an American invention dating from about 1865 – has made different appearances in the "Bicycle" line. The first ...

ST. PETERSBURG - Work on a 2.1-mile extension of the Pinellas Trail along the south side of First Avenue S into downtown St. Petersburg began last week.

The downtown spur, part of a countywide plan to grow the 34-mile recreational trail to 75 miles by 2020, will cost the city about $6-million, with a large part paid for through federal funding. It will connect the southern end of the trail at 34th Street to the downtown waterfront, creating ...

With new bike lanes popping up all over the Tampa Bay area, let's take a look at what the next step in auto/bike integration might look like. Similar to the painted crossover lanes in some parts of Pinellas County, Portland has begun coloring Bike Boxes in front of traffic to better allow cyclists to make left turns.

I say coloring because the lanes are not painted. A special adhesive is applied to the roadway, then a colored material called PreMark is applied and burned into the ...

Drew sent this ad placed on the back of a Jacksonville bus reminding motorists of the statewide three-foot law. In the lower left I can just barely see it was paid for by the North Florida Bicycle Club. It sure would be nice to see something like this implemented here in Tampa Bay, or even better, state-wide

That's how many Share the Road plates were sold in 2007, raising $164,880 for the Florida Bicycle Association. It ranked 46th among specialty plates sold, which was higher than the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch!

The University of Florida tag sold the most: 105,361. The Orlando Predators (Arena football. Yeah, I had to look it up) were last with two plates sold.

Road Wars are back on the news again. We have some motorists who can't stand to be delayed a few seconds by cyclists in the road. On the other side, there are some cyclists who find it inconvenient to put on the brakes at stop signs.

But if you look closer, the battle is really a struggle between individual self-interest and the compromise and cooperation required for a civil community. The roads are where we all interact as a community ...

Do you know what’s up with the Progress Energy Extension in NE St. Pete? I’ve been driving by the intersection of 9th and Gandy, seeing what looks to be work on the trail, but haven’t been able to find any information anywhere online about it. Is this indeed a part of the trail – and if so, when is it expected to be completed. The planned trail runs close to HSN and I’m hoping to be able to use it for commuting.

Thanks,

Kenneth

Bike lane ethics

Not many things annoy me more than someone going the wrong way in a bike lane. This counter-intelligent move puts everyone at risk: Them, me, passing motorists, the ozone layer. It's as bad as riding the wrong way on a one-way street. It's pretty cut and dry.

But Bike Snob NYC has a new dilemma for us to ponder. What if that vehicle that's parked in the bike lane happens to be unloading a whole bunch of new bikes? Spreading the joy of cycling whilst ruining it for others? Hmmm.....

At least two people were killed Sunday morning when Jesse Lopez, 29, drove a 1989 Gran Marquis into a group of cyclists racing the Bike Tour Matamoros-Playa Bagdad in Mexico. One of the two men killed was Alejandro Alvarez, 34, of Brownsville, Texas. The other name was not released. Lopez was driving drunk and under the influence of drugs, Matamoros newspapers reported in their Monday editions. Read the full story at the Brownsville Herald.
