The second Tour of Missouri, Sept. 8-14, will host 15 teams including the 2 U.S.-based squads fresh from surprisingly strong performances in the Tour de France -- Columbia and Garmin-Chipotle. Also committed are Italy's Liquigas and domestic powers including HealthNet-Maxxis, BMC, Rock Racing, Bissell and Toyota-United. The 7-day, 623-mile (1,003-km) tour starts with a road stage from St. Joseph to Kansas City, then travels eastward to finish with a circuit race in St. Louis. Team Columbia's George Hincapie is the defending champion.

The final announcement of teams for next month’s Tour of Missouri has added some international flavour to the seven day event around the “Show Me” State.

Garmin-Chipotle and Liquigas are now both confirmed starters for the tour with Garmin team director Jonathan Vaughters saying, “We will be back to win. This is not an end-of-the-season fun race for us. This is a serious objective for our team. It's a major event.”
In 2007 the then Slipstream squad took out the overall teams title as well as second place overall with Will Frischkorn and a win on stage 6 thanks to Danny Pate.

Joining Garmin-Chipotle and Liquigas are top international squad Team Columbia as well as Toyota United, HealthNet, BMC, Rock Racing, Bissell, Colovita Sutter Home, Jelly Belly, and Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast.

Mexico's top professional team Tecos and Canada's best squad Symmetrics , along with top European continental squads Rabobank (of the Netherlands) and Sparkasse of Germany will participate.

“Athletes from around the world will come to race in Missouri,” said Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. “Last year, they experienced great weather, great crowds, and were welcomed by big and small cities alike. We look forward to playing host to them all again in September.”

2008 Tour of Missouri Stage Overview
Stage 1, Monday, September 8 St. Joseph to Kansas City
This 90mile road race will follow a similar circuit to last year’s race, but will be run in the opposite direction and feature a 300m climb. The finish will be fast and furious with cyclists descending at about 45 miles per hour before winding up for the flat sprint to the line. Last year’s stage winner was Ivan Dominguez (Cuba), Toyota United

Stage 2, Tuesday, Sept 9, Clinton to Springfield
This 126mile long, flat road race stage was won in 2007 by George Hincapie (U.S.A.), while riding for the Discovery Channel team.

Stage 3, Wednesday, Sept 10, Branson ITT
The 18 miles ITT was described by 2007 overall race winner George Hincapie as, “the hardest time trial course,” he’d ever ridden.
Last year’s stage winner: Levi Leipheimer (U.S.A.), Discovery Channel

Stage 4, Thursday, Sept 11, Lebanon to Rolla
The route of the 95mile fourth stage passes through Fort Leonard Wood Military Reservation as a tribute to U.S. Armed Forces. Sprints will be contested at Fort Leonardwood and Richland en route to a finish adjacent to the campus of the University of Missouri. Among the three KOM points along the race route will be the 12%, half mile climb near Waynesville.

Stage 5, Friday, Sept 12, St. James to Jefferson City
The quaint wine country town of St. James will play host for the first time to a stage of the Tour. The 2 p.m. send off for the 108mile leg is the latest start of this year’s tour with the finish on a 300m uphill drag to the Capitol’s dome in Jefferson City.

Stage 6, Saturday, Sept 13, Hermann to St. Charles / 96 miles / road race
The 96mile stage will finish on the banks of the Mississippi River in historic St. Charles, where massive crowds greeted last year’s stage winner, Danny Pate (U.S.A.) of Slipstream – Chipotle.

Stage 7, Sunday, Sept 14, St. Louis
Organisers estimated that 55,000 spectators turned out to watch this 70mile circuit race last year, won by Ivan Dominguez (Cuba) of Toyota United to give him both the opening and closing stage of the 2007 race.
